Alabama Inmate Serving Life Sentence for 1989 Murder-for-Hire Dies After Prison Fall
A man who had spent decades behind bars for a 1989 murder-for-hire has died following a fall inside an Alabama correctional facility, officials confirmed this week.
Guy Greggory Griggs, 60, was serving a life sentence for a contract killing that traced back to Jefferson County more than 30 years ago. On January 9, Griggs suffered a serious head injury after falling at William Donaldson Correctional Facility, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
afterward, he was returned to the facility’s infirmary, where his condition deteriorated. Griggs was pronounced dead at 1:16 p.m. on Wednesday, Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said.

Details surrounding the fall remain limited, and authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected. The death adds to ongoing concerns about inmate safety, aging prison populations, and medical care inside Alabama’s correctional system issues that have drawn scrutiny in recent years.
Griggs’ conviction stemmed from a murder-for-hire case dating back to 1989, a crime that permanently altered multiple lives and anchored him to a life sentence. His death closes a long and troubled chapter, one that unfolded almost entirely behind prison walls.
An official cause of death is pending further examination by the coroner’s office.
