What to Expect from Kalen DeBoer’s New Alabama Offense in 2024
Learn how Kalen DeBoer's Alabama offense might differ from his Washington scheme, as the Crimson Tide prepare for their first game under his leadership.
When Kalen DeBoer took over Alabama football after Nick Saban, fans were curious about how his offense would compare to what he ran at Washington. At Washington, DeBoer’s offense was known for its high-powered passing game, which made the most of quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s skills.
However, DeBoer has made it clear that his approach at Alabama might look different.
“Our offense will always be built around the players we have,” DeBoer explained during his introduction. “We’ll recruit top talent, but our system will adapt to our strengths.”
Now, with the first game week finally here, Alabama is set to face Western Kentucky in their season opener. This will be Alabama's first game without Nick Saban since 2006.
Ahead of the game, DeBoer spoke about how his offense will evolve.
“Each year, it’s about adjusting to the roster you have,” DeBoer said. “You may have more depth at running back or tight end one year. We’re balanced across all skill positions, but we have to consider our quarterback and the offensive line too. It’s never exactly the same from year to year.”
This season, DeBoer will work with a different quarterback. Jalen Milroe, a redshirt junior, is in his second year as the starting quarterback. Milroe had an impressive 2023 season, even receiving some Heisman Trophy votes. He has a strong arm and can make plays with his legs. During camp, Milroe mentioned how he and DeBoer have been working together to shape the offense to his strengths.
On Tuesday, Milroe shared insights into how DeBoer built the 2024 Alabama offense.
“Coach DeBoer has a way of focusing on our strengths and weaknesses,” Milroe said. “Through spring, summer, and fall camp, we’ve gathered information and now we’re ready to build on it.”
While no one is giving away specifics on how DeBoer’s Alabama offense will differ from his time at Washington, fans will get a glimpse of it in the upcoming game against Western Kentucky.
“It’s tough to say exactly how our offense will look because we’ve only practiced against our defense and the scout team,” said offensive guard Tyler Booker. “We’ll have a better idea after the game, but I’m excited to see how Coach DeBoer calls plays in a real game situation.”
Alabama and Western Kentucky are set to kick off at 6:05 p.m. CT on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
