Suspect arrested in Birmingham’s 5 Points South mass shooting allegedly killed 6 people in 3 days
A 22-year-old man from Fairfield is in custody, accused of killing six people in Birmingham over a 72-hour period, including four individuals in a mass shooting outside Hush Lounge in Five Points South.
Damien Laron McDaniel III faces capital murder charges for the deaths of four victims during the September 21 shooting, along with 17 counts of first-degree assault for those injured.
Additionally, McDaniel is charged with the murder of Diontrante Tinae Brown, a 35-year-old mother who was an innocent bystander killed inside 604 Bar and Lounge on September 19. He also faces another capital murder charge for the robbery-related shooting death of 32-year-old Jamarcus McIntyre, who was shot the day after the Five Points South incident.
All three homicide cases are believed to be linked, although police have not disclosed the connections. Police Chief Scott Thurmond indicated that there is a common suspect in all three cases and emphasized ongoing investigations.
McDaniel was taken into custody last week at a Fairfield home and was already in jail for probation violations from a previous felony conviction. Court documents reveal that he had been recorded on social media brandishing firearms multiple times since his sentencing.
Three others have also been charged with capital murder in McIntyre’s death: Ny’Quan Cordae Lollar, Larry Denzel Rollins Jr., and Demarco Nakia Beck Jr. McIntyre was reportedly killed during a robbery.
The police investigation continues to explore potential ties between the shootings and illegal drug trade in the area. Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed commitment to bringing all responsible parties to justice following the mass shooting.
In total, more than 300 tips have been submitted, and police have been working diligently since the incidents occurred. The victims included individuals with complex backgrounds, and the nature of the shooting has raised concerns about possible retaliatory violence.
This is an ongoing story, and updates will follow.
