100 gunshots fired as Saraland police fatally shoot man in standoff after chase
A man is dead in Saraland after being shot by police during a standoff on Wednesday.
According to a spokesperson from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, officers were attempting to execute a warrant related to Internet Crimes Against Children. While trying to conduct a traffic stop, they noticed the man was armed.
Sheriff Paul Burch reported that the suspect attempted to flee, firing shots at pursuing officers. A PIT maneuver, a tactic used to stop fleeing vehicles, was executed, but the man drove back to his home, where he barricaded himself inside.
Officers attempted to negotiate with him, but he continued to fire at them, resulting in dozens of officers returning fire with approximately 100 shots. The man was struck multiple times and later died from his injuries.
Neighbor Dianne Wright, who was home during the standoff, described the chaotic scene to Fox10 News. “It was very scary,” she said, recalling the sound of gunfire as the suspect appeared to fire from inside his home. “I think he must have stuck his barrel out the door, and all the officers, about 50 of them, let loose bullets. It was just chaos.”
Wright noted that the man was a family man, with a wife and two children, and she had no idea he was in trouble with the law.
As the investigation continues, the man’s truck has been towed away from the scene.
