Shelby County Jail Investigates Death of 38-Year-Old Female Inmate
A 38-year-old female inmate dies at Shelby County Jail under mysterious circumstances, prompting an investigation by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and an autopsy by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
Authorities are investigating the death of a 38-year-old female inmate at the Shelby County Jail, where Carly Smith of Birmingham was found unresponsive early this morning. Smith, who had been arrested on August 8 for felony obstruction of justice, reportedly used a false identity in an attempt to evade capture due to multiple outstanding warrants.
Upon her arrival at the jail, Smith underwent a routine medical evaluation conducted by the facility’s on-site healthcare team. However, during a routine safety check by deputies shortly before 2 a.m., Smith was discovered in serious medical distress.
Jail staff and deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures as they awaited the arrival of Southeast Shelby Rescue medics. Despite their efforts, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:26 a.m.
Sheriff John Samaniego has called for an independent review of the incident by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office. Meanwhile, the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is set to perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
