Selma High School Teen Tragically Dies After Shooting: Community Mourns
Selma teen tragically dies after being shot, leaving a void in the community. The high school sophomore, full of potential, was a victim of a fatal shooting. Alabama mourns the loss.
A 16-year-old student from Selma High School has sadly passed away after being shot in the head last week.
The student, Au’Terrious Walter, died at UAB Hospital, surrounded by his family, according to Dallas County Coroner Alan Dailey. His death has been classified as a homicide.
“This is a hard time for all of us as we come to terms with this loss,” said Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd in a statement. “This young man showed so much promise, and his absence will be deeply felt by many.”
Au’Terrious was one of two Selma teenagers who died over the weekend.
Caden Tellier, a 16-year-old quarterback from Morgan Academy, was flown to UAB Hospital after getting injured during a game on Friday night. His family announced his passing on social media the following day.
Au’Terrious was shot just after 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday on Citizens Parkway in Selma. He was first taken to Vaughn Regional Medical Center in Selma, and then airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he passed away on Friday.
No further details about the shooting have been released, and no arrests have been made.
Superintendent Byrd mentioned that counselors would be available at the school this week to support students.
“In the days ahead, it is important that we come together as a community to support one another and remember the bright and promising life of this 16-year-old sophomore,” said the superintendent. “His loss is a profound tragedy for the entire school community.”
Superintendent Byrd also requested that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time. “As we move through this challenging period,” he said, “let’s remember this young man and keep his spirit alive in our hearts.”
