Mississippi homecoming celebration shooting kills 3, injures 8 in Holmes County

Three people were killed and eight others injured early Saturday in central Mississippi when at least two individuals opened fire into a crowd celebrating a school’s homecoming football victory. The shooting occurred at an outdoor trail several hours after the game, where several hundred people had gathered.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March reported that the gunfire followed a fight among some attendees, although investigators have not yet determined the cause of the altercation.

Sheriff March described the scene as chaotic: “The shooting just started, and people began to flee.”

The incident took place about five miles outside Lexington, Mississippi, after a victorious football game at Holmes County Consolidated School. Many young people had gathered to celebrate on the trail.

Among the deceased, two were 19 years old and one was 25. The injured victims were airlifted to local hospitals for treatment.
