Man shot dead in middle of street in south Birmingham neighborhood
A man was found shot to death in the middle of a street in a south Birmingham neighborhood on Saturday morning. The incident occurred on 24th Avenue South, just off the busy Green Springs Highway.
Sgt. Bryan Shelton reported that Birmingham Police received the call around 6:30 a.m. and arrived to find the man unresponsive. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Residents reported hearing a commotion followed by gunfire, but no arrests have been made as of yet.
“It’s early in the investigation, and we do not have a motive,” Shelton said. “Every homicide is a tragedy, and our hearts go out to the family. Our investigators are committed to bringing closure to them.”
This slaying marks Birmingham's 131st homicide of the year, with nine ruled justifiable and two victims from previous years who died in 2024. Across Jefferson County, there have been a total of 165 homicides.
