How to Easily Order Free COVID-19 Tests for Your Household

The federal government has restarted its program that offers free at-home COVID-19 tests.

Every household in the U.S. can now order up to four free COVID-19 tests by visiting covidtests.gov. These are rapid antigen tests that use a nasal swab to detect the virus. One type of test is specially designed for people with disabilities, including those who have difficulty with hand movements or are blind or have low vision.

Shipping of the free tests began last week, just in time for the upcoming flu and COVID seasons.

Dawn O’Connell from the Department of Health and Human Services encourages everyone to take a quick test before meeting with family and friends during the holidays to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Some of the tests may have expired dates, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has extended the expiration dates for many of them. You can find a list of those extensions online.

Since the program started in 2021, over 900 million free tests have been sent out.

To order your free tests, visit COVIDtests.gov. If you need tests designed for people with disabilities, go to ACL.gov/AccessibleTests.gov.
