Walton Goggins of Alabama Snags Emmy Nomination for Spooky Role in ‘Fallout’
Alabama’s own Walton Goggins has secured an Emmy nomination for his standout performance in the TV series “Fallout.”
Goggins, 52, hailing from Birmingham, is up for the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. He faces stiff competition from notable actors like Idris Elba, Gary Oldman, and Donald Glover. The series “Fallout” itself has been nominated for Best Drama Series among its impressive total of 16 Emmy nominations.
The 76th Emmy Awards nominees were announced on Wednesday at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles.
In “Fallout,” Goggins brings to life Cooper “The Ghoul” Howard, a pivotal character in the post-apocalyptic series available on Amazon Prime. Based on a popular video game, the series features Goggins as a gunslinger who lived through the bombing of the United States over 200 years before the main storyline begins. His character, scarred by radiation, survives the nuclear war to become a bounty hunter known for his “code of honor and ruthless demeanor,” according to Fallout Wiki. A complex figure, part villain, and part antihero, The Ghoul has become a fan favorite. Goggins has mentioned drawing inspiration for the role from classic Western actors like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.
This marks Goggins’ second Emmy nomination. He first received a nod in 2011 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in FX’s “Justified.” His portrayal of Boyd Crowder, a captivating criminal often clashing with U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (played by Timothy Olyphant), earned him widespread acclaim.
Goggins boasts an extensive television resume, including notable roles in “The Righteous Gemstones,” “George & Tammy,” “Vice Principals,” “The Unicorn,” “The Shield,” “Six,” “Sons of Anarchy,” and more. His film appearances include “Fatman,” “Tomb Raider,” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “The Hateful Eight.”
Earlier this year, Goggins was confirmed to join the cast of Season 3 of the HBO hit series “The White Lotus.” Additionally, “Fallout” has been renewed for a second season on Amazon.
The winners of the 2024 Emmy Awards will be revealed on September 15 during a ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. ABC will broadcast the Emmy Awards live that evening, starting at 7 p.m. CT.
