Coach Profile: Back in the game

Ciera Stratton, Hunter Crawford-Shelmadine, Allegra Ferme, and Megan Olazar have returned to Carlmont’s swimming pool nearly a decade after their high school days. Now coaching the JV and varsity girls' water polo teams, they bring a deep-rooted passion for the sport and a unique synergy from their shared high school experience under coach Bernice Orwig, a two-time Olympic silver medalist who inspired their love for water polo.

“It was so fun, and we learned so much,” Stratton said. “Playing at Carlmont made me fall even more in love with the sport.”

Their coaching approach benefits from their common background and the legacy of positive reinforcement left by Orwig.

“It helps us align on our coaching philosophies and continue what we’ve learned,” Olazar explained.

The coaches aim to give the players the same fulfilling experience they had. Their shared history fosters a strong bond, which translates into their coaching style.

“Having all of us played together before is really helpful. Our good relationship enhances the team dynamics,” Ferme said.

Ferme and Olazar joined Carlmont in 2013, with Stratton and Crawford-Shelmadine following the next year. They feel that returning to the pool deck brings back a sense of continuity.

“Hunter and I stayed best friends, and it’s been great reconnecting with Allegra and Megan,” Stratton noted.

The coaches are eager to work together, aiming to help the players develop their skills and enjoy the season. Their primary goal is for the girls to have fun while achieving success.

“I’m looking forward to mid-season when everyone knows their role and the team’s bond strengthens,” Olazar said.

Seniors Aubrey Button, Audrey Finigan, and Carly Foehr, the varsity team captains, share in the excitement.

“It’s amazing to see the coaches return and bring their high school passion back,” Button said. “It makes me hopeful for lifelong friendships through this sport, just like they have.”
