Chip English Takes the Helm at Hoover Football, Steers Team Through Transition

Chip English is no stranger to the challenges that come with leading a high-profile football program. With years of head coaching experience in North Carolina and North Alabama, English is now stepping into a role with even higher expectations—guiding the Hoover Bucs.

"Coaching at Hoover is on a different level," English acknowledges. "The support here is tremendous. Our booster club has gone above and beyond, ensuring we’re well-prepared. Unlike my previous teams at Grissom or Albertville, where I had just over 100 players, Hoover's program includes more than 200 athletes. The scale and significance of this role are immense, both literally and figuratively."

English was initially brought in as Hoover’s assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. However, following the abrupt resignation of head coach Drew Gilmer and defensive coordinator Adam Helms due to an ongoing investigation, English was thrust into the top job. Despite the sudden change, English remained committed to maintaining the team’s focus.

"Even with the unexpected news, our team hasn’t missed a beat. We’ve kept up with our practices, workouts, and meetings. It’s essential to keep these kids on a routine, and I believe we’ve done a good job of that," English shared.

The offensive side of the ball saw a smooth transition since English was already in charge. The defensive side, however, required some adjustments. Josh Reeves, previously the defensive line coach, was promoted to defensive coordinator. English and Reeves have a long history, having worked together at West Caldwell in North Carolina and later at Grissom and Albertville.

"Replacing Coach Helms was a challenge, but Josh Reeves stepped up. His intensity and passion are exactly what our defense needs," English noted. "He pushes the players hard, and they’ve responded well."

High school sports are demanding, and the sudden departure of a head coach just weeks before the season could have been a significant setback. Yet, English and his coaching staff have prioritized communication and purpose in their approach.

"We’ve been in constant communication with our players. Our message is clear: when it’s time for football, we’re all in. But we’re also aware of the emotional and psychological aspects, ensuring the kids are balanced and ready to perform. The players have shown resilience, and they trust us because we’ve been transparent throughout this process," English explained.

Taking over a storied program like Hoover is no small task, and English is fully aware of the legacy he’s stepping into.

"I’m honored to lead this team. The support from the superintendent, principal, athletic director, and the entire community has been incredible. Hoover is a special place, and I’m excited about the future," he said.

For English, this isn’t just a professional commitment—it's personal. His son, Trot, is a senior on the football team, and his daughter, Tatum, is a standout basketball player who helped Hoover secure a state championship as an eighth-grader last season. With three other children, Teagan, Tebow, and Ty, the English family is deeply embedded in the Hoover community.

"My family is all-in with Hoover. My wife is incredibly supportive, and you’ll often find my kids at the field house. We’re all excited for the season to begin," English shared with a smile.

As the Hoover Bucs gear up to open their season on August 24 against Western, Florida, English’s leadership and the team’s resilience will be on full display. The transition may have been unexpected, but with English at the helm, Hoover football remains focused and determined.
