CHICAGO – This week at the Democratic National Convention, Alabama delegates shared their excitement about Shomari Figures’ Thursday night speech, calling it a hopeful moment for Alabama Democrats.
Delegate Jamie Lowe noted the lack of strong Democratic leaders in Alabama and highlighted Figures as a fresh, enthusiastic voice. “For the first time in a long while, Alabama Democrats have something to celebrate,” Lowe said.
In a state where the 2020 election saw former President Donald Trump win by a large margin and Democratic Sen. Doug Jones was defeated, Alabama is often seen as a strong Republican state. Figures’ speech, however, gave delegates hope for change.
Figures’ address honored his late father, former State Sen. Micheal Figures, and his mother, State Sen. Vivian Figures, who was attending her 11th DNC. Figures urged Americans to vote and continue the work of past freedom fighters.
Figures is running against Republican Caroleene Dobson for a seat in Congress from the newly redrawn district that includes Montgomery and Mobile. The outcome of this race could influence control of the House of Representatives.
“We’re thrilled about the potential for another Democratic representative in Alabama’s second district,” said Randy Kelley, chair of the state’s Democratic Party. “Figures is intelligent and dedicated to public service.”
The Alabama delegation was also excited about their accommodations and seating at the United Center. They stayed at the Palmer House and had the chance to meet influential figures like Gov. Andy Beshear and Gov. Josh Shapiro.
Delegate Sheila Smoot mentioned that they heard from powerful voices, including powerful black women, thanks to Congresswoman Sewell. Vanessa Pettway, wife of Sheriff Mark Pettway, gave the benediction at their breakfast.
The Alabama delegation’s new seating location at the convention, closer to the stage, was a result of their requests to the DNC. They were pleased to see photographers and press focusing on their section, which included the Walz family and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
“I’ve never seen such energy at the DNC,” Smoot said.
