Former three-time boxing world champion Israel Vázquez has been diagnosed with cancer, officials announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, the World Boxing Council (WBC) expressed their concern: "Our hearts are heavy as we share the news that our beloved champion, Israel Vázquez, is battling cancer. A warrior in the ring and a hero in life, Israel needs our support now more than ever."
Vázquez, widely known in the boxing world as “Magnifico,” retired in May 2010 following his final bout against fellow Mexican boxer Rafael Márquez. Over the course of his career, he amassed a record of 44 wins, including 32 knockouts (KOs), and 5 losses across 49 professional fights.
In their statement, the WBC also shared a link to a GoFundMe campaign set up to support the former champion.
“Let’s stand united and show Israel that we’re in his corner. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact,” the statement urged.
