70-year-old woman killed when driver fleeing Bessemer police hit her head-on, coroner says

A Birmingham woman was tragically killed when her vehicle was struck head-on by a motorist fleeing from Bessemer police.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 70-year-old Angela Strickland Lockhart. The collision occurred at 1:17 p.m. on Monday on Interstate 59/20 near Academy Drive in Bessemer.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates reported that Lockhart’s vehicle was hit by another car that was attempting to escape from police. Efforts to obtain further details from the police have been unsuccessful so far.

Lockhart was transported to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:16 p.m. At least one other individual sustained injuries in the incident.

The crash resulted in the closure of that segment of the interstate for several hours, and Alabama State Troopers are currently investigating the case.
